This Saturday marked the commencement of the Ligue 1 season, with OGC Nice hosting FC Lorient. The opening fixture concluded in a goalless stalemate, with neither side managing to break the deadlock (0-0).
Having finished 16th last season, Nice was eager to reinvigorate their campaign and firmly establish their presence in Ligue 1. This renewed determination was evident from the very first match against FC Lorient, a team that impressed under Olivier Pantaloni last season, who now ironically leads the Nice squad, known as the Gym.
In this inaugural match, dedicated to the memory of Eric Roy, the Corsican coach deployed his familiar 3-4-3 formation. The promising 17-year-old Junior Mandza, who shone during pre-season, earned a starting spot in defense. In midfield, Everton Pereira was given the nod over Issiaga Camara. The Eagles’ coach also placed his trust in Gauthier Hein, forming an attacking trio alongside Sofian Diop and Zoumana Diallo. Jonathan Clauss proudly wore the captain’s armband.
A notable statistic: Lorient has not secured a victory on Nice’s home turf since April 2014, when they triumphed 1-2.
A lively opening, yet lacking precision
Following an initial ten-minute period of tactical assessment where Lorient appeared more composed, Théo Le Bris delivered a dangerous cross from the right flank towards Koné, who narrowly failed to connect with the ball. Nice, however, refused to yield. In the 14th minute, Sofiane Diop capitalized on a slip by Kouassi inside the penalty area, unleashing a shot that was parried by goalkeeper Mvogo. This was swiftly followed by another opportunity where attempts from Gauthier Hein and Jonathan Clauss were bravely blocked by the Breton defense.
Yet, complacency proved to be a danger. In the 21st minute, Coulibaly lost possession perilously close to his own box, allowing Makengo to seize the ball and send it narrowly wide of the top corner. Yehvann Diouf then committed another error with his distribution. Fortunately for him, he redeemed himself with a superb save against Bernardeau. Just before halftime, Everton Pereira believed he had opened the scoring after a deflection from a corner, but a foul on Cadiou was whistled, nullifying the goal.
“We had some scares, but that’s part of our game. Upfront, we created chances; it’s just small details we need to refine to convert them,” a reassured Antoine Mendy commented to Ligue 1+.
A quieter second period
Upon the resumption of play after the interval, the match’s rhythm underwent a complete transformation. Both teams settled into a more conservative approach, leading to a prolonged period of mutual containment. Around the hour mark, Noah Cadiou and then Mamadou Koné tested the Nice goalkeeper in a well-constructed attacking sequence, but the shot-stopper held firm.
New striker Nathan Ngoumou, introduced as a substitute, had his moment. In the 83rd minute, he attempted to carve out a shooting angle within the box, but his effort was once again blocked by the defense. The final scare of the match occurred in injury time, as Lorient forward Tosin met a good cross with a powerful header that sailed just over Yehvann Diouf’s goal.
For Sofiane Diop, one critical area for improvement lies in ball distribution from the back, which was often imprecise during the game: “We cannot afford to hand ammunition to our opponents every weekend.”
This result marks the sixth consecutive season that the Gym has failed to win their opening match. Next week, Nice will travel to the capital to face Paris FC. That fixture is scheduled for Sunday, August 30, at 3 PM.
