Gabonese delegation delivers message to Madagascar president at independence celebration

On Friday, June 26, 2026, the capital of Madagascar, Antananarivo, hosted a grand celebration marking the 66th anniversary of the country’s independence, declared on June 26, 1960. The official event, highlighted by military and civilian parades, drew dignitaries from across the globe, including a high-level delegation from Gabon.

The Gabonese delegation, led by Hermann Immongault, Vice-President of the Government and envoy of President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, actively participated in the festivities and was granted a formal audience with President Michaël Randrianirina of Madagascar.

During the meeting, Immongault presented an official message from Gabon’s President to his Malagasy counterpart. « The bond between Madagascar and Gabon remains exceptionally strong. I was entrusted with delivering an official message from our President to his Malagasy counterpart, » he stated following the exchange. He further emphasized that President Randrianirina had referenced his recent visit to Libreville and expressed a renewed commitment to deepening bilateral ties. Both nations, he noted, share vast untapped potential—particularly in maritime, economic, and institutional cooperation.

Strengthening ties through shared governance insights

Immongault underscored the mutual challenges both Gabon and Madagascar face as members of the African Union, particularly concerning governance, institutional stability, and South-South cooperation. He pointed out that while Madagascar was temporarily suspended from the continental body during its political transition, Gabon recently navigated a similar phase. As a current member of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council, Libreville is positioned to assist Antananarivo by sharing its transition management experience.

The Gabonese official revealed that President Randrianirina had expressed keen interest in studying Gabon’s transition model to adapt its lessons to Madagascar’s context. This shared perspective underscores a mutual desire to build a partnership rooted in knowledge exchange and political collaboration. The national festivities in Madagascar thus served as a pivotal platform to reaffirm the enduring friendship between Gabon and Madagascar and their joint dedication to fostering stronger bilateral relations and continental stability.
