Gabon: CLR rallies supporters ahead of 2027 party congress

The Centre des Libéraux Réformateurs (CLR) has launched a full-scale revival campaign in Libreville, marking a pivotal moment for the party as it prepares for its upcoming congress in one year. Founded by Jean-Boniface Assélé, the political movement is rallying its ranks to reposition itself in Gabon’s evolving political landscape while reaffirming its unwavering support for President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.

This weekend’s gathering at the Cabaret des Artistes in Libreville’s fifth arrondissement brought together party leaders for an expanded executive meeting. The primary objective? To lay the groundwork for a robust organizational renewal, ensuring the CLR remains a key player in national politics as the country navigates its post-transition phase.

Preparing for the 2027 congress

With the 2027 congress looming, Jean-Boniface Assélé emphasized the urgency of strategic recalibration. Addressing concerns about the party’s future, he dismissed skepticism with confidence, stating, « Many have already declared the CLR dead, but this mobilization proves otherwise. »* The gathering served as a clear signal that the party’s revival is underway, with militants and leaders engaging in unfiltered discussions about internal challenges and future pathways.

A dedicated reflection committee has been established to outline the terms of the party’s relaunch. Assélé also announced the imminent appointment of new internal leaders to reinvigorate the CLR’s grassroots structures, ensuring stronger territorial outreach ahead of the congress.

Reaffirming the CLR’s role in Gabon’s transition

The weekend’s proceedings included the unveiling of a 2024-2025 activity report, highlighting the CLR’s active participation in critical phases of Gabon’s political transition. The document underscores the party’s contributions to the referendum and presidential campaigns, positioning itself as a steadfast ally of the current administration’s institutional reforms initiated since August 30, 2023.

As Gabon’s political arena undergoes significant reshaping, the CLR is determined to remain a prominent voice in public discourse. The challenge ahead lies in converting this renewal momentum into a grassroots-driven force capable of influencing future elections and strengthening the nation’s democratic institutions.
