Diplomats leave France after Burkina Faso severs ties
Breaking news. All twelve Burkinabè diplomats stationed in France have returned to Ouagadougou, signaling the formal closure of Burkina Faso’s embassy in Paris. This move follows the country’s decision to cut diplomatic relations with France.

Formal closure of Burkina Faso’s embassy in Paris
Upon their return to Ouagadougou, the twelve diplomats handed over the national flag and keys of the Parisian diplomatic premises to Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré. This gesture officially marks the end of Burkina Faso’s diplomatic presence in France, countering rumors of asylum requests among staff.
Diplomatic rupture: Burkina Faso’s stance
Burkina Faso announced the severance of relations with France on June 26. In response, French diplomats left Ouagadougou in early July, while their Burkinabè counterparts were given until July 6 to depart France. Ouagadougou justified the decision, citing what it described as France’s « relentless activism » against its interests. Paris condemned the move as « hostile and unfounded. »
Years of strained relations
Since Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s ascent to power in September 2022, Burkina Faso has progressively distanced itself from its former French partner. Following the withdrawal of French forces, Ouagadougou has strengthened ties with new allies, including Russia, Turkey, and Iran.
