SOLIBRA has officially launched the ECO BOX project, a initiative aimed at strengthening the fight against plastic pollution and promoting a sustainable circular economy in Treichville commune on World Plastic Free Day, July 3rd.
The choice of Treichville as the location for this project stems from its daily production of significant quantities of plastic waste that clog drains and damage infrastructure. To address this issue, ECO BOX aims to transform these waste into valuable resources through a structured collection and recycling system.
The project relies on a collaboration between SOLIBRA, Treichville’s Fondation J’Adore, and BIRWAST, a specialized company in plastic waste recycling. This synergy seeks to improve waste management, preserve the urban environment, and create new economic opportunities at the local level.
To enable the launch of activities, various equipment was handed over to operational teams, including six brooms, one trike, 80 trash bags, twelve rakes, gloves, shovels, and traditional tools. According to a note released, this equipment will facilitate efficient waste collection.
Through ECO BOX, partners aim to achieve several objectives, including the gradual elimination of plastic waste from drainage systems to reduce flood risks, job creation for young people in the commune as collectors and drivers, and plastic waste value through recycling.
The project also focuses on community sensitization. Collectors will be tasked with encouraging residents to adopt proper waste disposal practices and promoting a culture of cleanliness within the commune.
A launch ceremony was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by the handover of keys to the first trike for one of the collectors who will navigate Treichville’s streets to collect plastic waste.
