Côte d’Ivoire champions human-centered migration governance at un forum

The Côte d’Ivoire has taken a bold step forward on the global stage by actively participating in the second session of the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Through this strategic engagement, the country is reinforcing its dedication to migration governance rooted in cooperation, human dignity, and sustainable development.

This high-level gathering, centered on the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration adopted in 2018 in Marrakech, brings together nations to address critical challenges in global human mobility. The Côte d’Ivoire delegation, led by Dr. Souleymane Diarrassouba, Minister of Planning and Development, and represented by Dr. Hinin Moustapha, Director-General of the National Population Office (ONP), played a key role in discussions on best practices and state commitments under the Global Compact.

Advancing migration data infrastructure and policy reforms

In his address, the Ivorian representative highlighted the nation’s significant advancements in migration management across multiple priority areas. These include the enhancement of migration data systems, reduction of vulnerabilities, combating discrimination, and strengthening international cooperation. A key focus was placed on modernizing the country’s statistical framework to improve understanding of migration patterns.

The Côte d’Ivoire has embarked on a transformative journey to overhaul its data collection and analysis processes, aiming to produce reliable, up-to-date, and disaggregated information. This initiative culminated in the launch of a comprehensive national migration survey in 2025—a milestone that positions the country as a leader in evidence-based migration governance across Africa.

Building inclusive pathways for migrant protection

Beyond data-driven strategies, the Côte d’Ivoire is prioritizing the protection of migrants through integrated support systems and inclusive social policies. These measures are designed to ensure dignified treatment, facilitate safe reintegration, and minimize exposure to exploitation and hardship.

Combating discrimination remains a cornerstone of the Ivorian approach. National authorities have intensified awareness campaigns and strengthened institutional frameworks to foster a more inclusive society that upholds human rights for all individuals, regardless of origin.

Championing global solidarity in migration governance

The Ivorian delegation underscored the indispensability of international cooperation grounded in shared responsibility and mutual solidarity. According to Abidjan, tackling migration challenges effectively demands a unified response from countries of origin, transit, and destination.

This participation in the IMRF reflects a forward-thinking vision—one that reframes migration not merely as a social or security concern, but as a strategic catalyst for economic, cultural, and human development. With a long-standing tradition of openness and hospitality, the Côte d’Ivoire is committed to harnessing migration as a driver of shared prosperity, anchored in dignity, solidarity, and intelligent data utilization.
