JOINT PRESS RELEASE
Kinshasa, 11 July 2026 – The Democratic Republic of the Congo is taking bold steps this World Population Day to harness its youthful demographic dividend. With over 65% of its population under 25, the nation has adopted a forward-looking theme: « Turning youth aspirations into today’s achievements for tomorrow’s prosperity ». The joint initiative by UNFPA and the Ministry of Planning underscores a critical message: the future of the Congo hinges on empowering its young people today.
The demographic shift represents both an opportunity and a challenge. UNFPA and government leaders warn that without targeted action, the nation risks squandering its greatest asset. « This is not just about numbers, » explains a senior UNFPA representative. « It’s about unlocking the potential of millions who dream of building stable lives and contributing to national progress. »
Groundbreaking survey reveals youth priorities in the Congo
UNFPA’s latest global report, drawn from surveys of 100,000 young people across 73 countries, shatters common misconceptions. Contrary to stereotypes, Congolese youth—like their global peers—aspire to start families, but face daunting barriers: economic instability, scarce job opportunities, and inadequate housing.
Findings show that 88% of young Congolese consider financial security a prerequisite for parenthood. « This isn’t a rejection of family life, » notes a youth advocate. « It’s a demand for equitable chances and stability so we can make informed choices about our futures. »
UNFPA’s Executive Director emphasizes that demographic policies grounded in coercion will fail unless they address the real obstacles young people face. « Policies must listen to youth voices, » she states. « Only then can we create the conditions for them to thrive. »
Strategic investments to unlock Congo’s demographic potential
Amid ongoing challenges in the eastern regions, UNFPA and the Congolese government are accelerating a two-pronged strategy aligned with the National Development Strategy (2024–2028):
-
Expanding access to reproductive health services and quality education, with a focus on empowering girls and women to take control of their futures.
-
Supporting the second General Population and Housing Census (RGPH2) and developing demographic dividend profiles by province to direct investments where youth needs are most urgent.
Investing in youth: A pathway to national prosperity
UNFPA stresses that investing in young people isn’t an expense—it’s the most effective economic strategy a nation can pursue. « The dividends are clear, » says a government planning official. « A skilled, healthy, and empowered youth population drives innovation, productivity, and long-term stability. »
« Young people across every province have spoken, » adds UNFPA’s Executive Director. « It’s time to act on their aspirations—not just with words, but with policies and resources that turn their dreams into reality. »
The call to action extends to development partners, civil society, and the private sector: collaborate to reshape the narrative and build a Congo that is innovative, resilient, and future-ready.
