Chad’s political tensions: a look at opposition arrests

On “L’Arbre à Palabres”, political analysts convened to discuss the recent arrests of opposition figures across Chad.

In Chad, opposition leader Succès Masra remains incarcerated after the Supreme Court rejected his appeal on Thursday.

The former Prime Minister, apprehended in May 2025, received a twenty-year prison sentence for “dissemination of hateful and xenophobic messages” and “complicity in murder.” Human Rights Watch, a prominent human rights organization, has labeled this verdict a politically motivated trial.

Earlier in May, the N’Djamena High Court sentenced eight leaders from the former Political Actors’ Consultation Group (GCAP) to eight years of strict imprisonment each. Prosecutors had initially sought ten-year terms.

Prominent guests convened to dissect the latest political developments in Chad:

  • Maître Mamadou Ismaïla Konaté, a legal expert and former Malian Minister of Justice.
  • Abdel-Nasser Garboa, spokesperson for the ruling Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS).
  • Clément Sianka, communications officer for the RNDT Le Réveil party, led by opposition chief Albert Pahimi Padacké.
