President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has terminated Ousmane Sonko’s role as Prime Minister and Head of Government in Senegal.

The announcement was made during a national broadcast by President Faye himself, marking a significant turning point in the relationship between these two prominent political figures.

The dismissal also signifies the end of tenure for all ministers and deputy ministers within the government.

Following the announcement, Ousmane Sonko took to social media to share his reaction: “Alhamdoulillah. Tonight, I will sleep peacefully at the Keur Gorgui residence.”

The removal of Ousmane Sonko from the Prime Minister position also triggers the dissolution of the entire government.

In a statement, the Republic’s Presidency announced that a new Prime Minister will be appointed and a new government formed by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

It is worth noting that Ousmane Sonko played a pivotal role in Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s election to the presidency in 2024. Initially barred from running, Sonko endorsed Faye as the candidate, and together they campaigned successfully. The election concluded in a single round with Faye securing over 54% of the votes.
