Chad’s delegation to the World Urban Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan, has achieved a significant outcome. The nation has been officially designated as the eleventh country to qualify for the United Nations Green Climate Fund’s Building Climate Resilience of Urban Populations (BCRUP) program, which previously included ten member states.
This international acknowledgment underscores Chad’s proactive commitment to tackling critical issues such as recurrent flooding, internal population displacement, and the severe impacts of climate change affecting its metropolitan areas.
During the forum, the Chadian delegation, led by Minister Mahamat Assileck Halata, held a productive meeting with the Executive Director of UN-Habitat. Their discussions centered on vital aspects of urban resilience and potential avenues for future collaboration. Following these engagements, an initial project was approved for funding, projected to receive between $900,000 and $1 million, thereby setting the stage for more substantial financial support from UN-Habitat in the upcoming months.
