Astrid Pérez, President of the Canary Islands Parliament, commended Fatiha El Kamouri for her four-year tenure as Morocco’s consul to the islands, highlighting strengthened institutional ties between Morocco and the Canary Islands.
Astrid Pérez, President of the Canary Islands Parliament, met this Wednesday with Fatiha El Kamouri, Morocco’s general consul to the Canary Islands, to mark the conclusion of her four-year term in the archipelago. During their meeting, Pérez expressed deep appreciation for El Kamouri’s contributions in fostering institutional relations between the Canary Islands and Morocco.
The Canary Islands Parliament recognized El Kamouri’s pivotal role in strengthening cooperation between the islands and Morocco, particularly through her leadership in enhancing economic, cultural, and political ties over her tenure.
El Kamouri, of Sahrawi origin, arrived in the Canary Islands in 2022 after serving as Morocco’s consul in Bilbao for six years. Her diplomatic work included extensive engagement with the Moroccan community in the islands and fostering strong institutional relationships.
Local observers emphasize that El Kamouri’s efforts significantly advanced the Canary Islands’ relationship with Morocco, aligning with the broader diplomatic stance of the Spanish government. The region’s support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative for Western Sahara reflects a strategic understanding of regional security and economic opportunities.
Fernando Clavijo, President of the Canary Islands, has played a key role in this partnership, visiting Morocco multiple times and signing collaboration agreements across various sectors. Notably, his reception of Karim Achengli and over 80 business representatives from the Souss-Massa region in Las Palmas underscores the shift from political dialogue to tangible actions.
The Canary Islands are now seen as a natural partner for Morocco’s development, particularly in sectors like water desalination, infrastructure management, and technological research. Businesses from both regions are increasingly collaborating on joint projects, driven by mutual interests in stability and shared prosperity.
El Kamouri’s diplomatic work over the past years has been instrumental in this evolving relationship, fostering trust and opening new avenues for cooperation between the Canary Islands and Morocco.
