Burundi reaffirms unwavering support for Morocco’s Sahara sovereignty
On Friday, June 19, 2026, the Republic of Burundi reiterated its unconditional and steadfast backing for Morocco’s full territorial integrity, including the Sahara region. The declaration came during a working visit to Rabat by Burundi’s Foreign Minister, Edouard Bizimana, who held high-level talks with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita.
In a joint communiqué issued after the meeting, Bujumbura not only reaffirmed its endorsement of Morocco’s autonomy plan but also emphasized that this initiative remains the only viable and credible solution to resolve the long-standing regional dispute. The Burundi government also expressed its strong support for ongoing United Nations-led negotiations grounded in this proposal.
diplomatic momentum builds around Morocco’s autonomy initiative
This renewed show of support aligns with a growing trend of African backing for Rabat’s position on the Sahara question. Burundi further welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which it described as a landmark endorsement of the Moroccan autonomy plan under full national sovereignty. The resolution is widely seen as a significant diplomatic victory for Morocco as it continues to rally international support for its initiative.
The meeting between Bizimana and Bourita underscores the strategic importance Rabat places on strengthening ties with African nations to consolidate its position in the Sahara dispute. Morocco’s proactive diplomacy has yielded increasing recognition of its autonomy proposal as the cornerstone of a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political settlement.
