Burkina Faso implements historic medicine price cuts to improve healthcare
The Government of Burkina Faso has announced unprecedented reductions in the cost of essential generic medicines and medical supplies, with price drops reaching up to 72%. Effective from March 1, 2026, the price adjustments target medications distributed through the Central Purchasing Agency for Essential Generic Medicines (CAMEG), including a wide range of generic drugs and health products. The reform follows a 3 billion FCFA investment by the state to ensure its successful implementation.
Comprehensive price reductions across key medical categories
According to Dr. Robert Lucien Jean-Claude Kargougou, Minister of Health, the price cuts vary significantly across different product categories:
- Tablets and capsules: Up to 67.27% reduction
- Injectable medications: Up to 53.47% reduction
- Syrups and suspensions: Up to 20% reduction
- Medical consumables: Up to 72.73% reduction
