Burkina Faso slashes medicine prices to boost healthcare access

Burkina Faso implements historic medicine price cuts to improve healthcare

The Government of Burkina Faso has announced unprecedented reductions in the cost of essential generic medicines and medical supplies, with price drops reaching up to 72%. This landmark decision aims to democratize access to healthcare and alleviate financial burdens on households across the country.

Effective from March 1, 2026, the price adjustments target medications distributed through the Central Purchasing Agency for Essential Generic Medicines (CAMEG), including a wide range of generic drugs and health products. The reform follows a 3 billion FCFA investment by the state to ensure its successful implementation.

Comprehensive price reductions across key medical categories

According to Dr. Robert Lucien Jean-Claude Kargougou, Minister of Health, the price cuts vary significantly across different product categories:

  • Tablets and capsules: Up to 67.27% reduction
  • Injectable medications: Up to 53.47% reduction
  • Syrups and suspensions: Up to 20% reduction
  • Medical consumables: Up to 72.73% reduction

Driving equitable healthcare through financial commitment

This initiative builds on Burkina Faso’s commitment to universal healthcare access. The government’s 3 billion FCFA budget allocation will help reduce out-of-pocket healthcare expenses for citizens, ensuring that no one is left behind due to financial constraints.

The current price adjustments follow a similar initiative in May 2025, which generated nearly 5 billion FCFA in savings for households. By continuing this downward trend in medicine prices, Burkina Faso reinforces its dedication to providing high-quality, affordable healthcare for all its residents.

What this means for citizens and the healthcare system

The historic price reductions are expected to:

  • Enhance affordability of essential medications for low- and middle-income families
  • Encourage medication adherence by removing financial barriers to treatment
  • Strengthen public health by ensuring consistent access to vital drugs
  • Support local healthcare facilities through reduced costs of medical consumables

With these measures, Burkina Faso takes a significant step toward achieving its health equity goals and improving the overall well-being of its population.
