Burkina Faso secures substantial funding to fortify its health system

WASHINGTON, January 24, 2025 – The World Bank today announced the approval of a significant financial package aimed at bolstering Burkina Faso’s healthcare infrastructure. This package includes a credit of 142 million euros (equivalent to 150 million US dollars) from the International Development Association (IDA)*, complemented by a 17 million dollar grant from the Global Financing Facility (GFF). These funds are earmarked for the Project to Strengthen the Performance and Resilience of the Health System (PRPRSS).

This critical initiative is designed to enhance disease surveillance and improve access to vital health and nutrition services. Its primary beneficiaries include adolescents, women, and children under the age of five. The project will be implemented nationwide, with a particular focus on addressing the needs of internally displaced persons and communities facing limited access to medical care.

“Human development is a cornerstone of social inclusion and stands as a paramount priority for the World Bank. This project is strategically designed to bolster the government’s efforts in building resilience and managing the current challenges within the health sector. It seamlessly integrates with the recently approved Human Capital Protection Project, a 100.4 million dollar endeavor focused on enhancing the delivery of essential social services,” stated Hamoud Abdel Wedoud Kamil, the World Bank Resident Representative in Burkina Faso.

The PRPRSS aligns perfectly with the World Bank’s strategy for the West and Central Africa region. This strategy aims to reinforce the social contract by strengthening core institutions responsible for delivering fundamental social services.

“Ensuring women, adolescents, and children have access to healthcare represents one of the most invaluable investments governments can make to steer countries towards development and prosperity. The GFF is proud to partner with the government of Burkina Faso in establishing an efficient and resilient health system, guaranteeing healthcare provisions for these key demographics, even within the most vulnerable regions,” emphasized Luc Laviolette, Head of the GFF Secretariat.

“This project arrives at a crucial moment, as it will significantly contribute to fortifying the nation’s capabilities in preparing for and responding to health emergencies. Concurrently, it will elevate the quality and utilization of health and nutrition services. Furthermore, it will extend the World Bank’s support for the various reforms undertaken by the Ministry of Health, aiming to enhance governance, promote equity, and ensure sustainable financing within the health sector,” explained Moussa Dieng, the World Bank Health Portfolio Manager.
