Burkina Faso severs diplomatic ties with France
The Government of Burkina Faso has announced the official termination of its diplomatic relations with France, effective June 26, 2026.
Decision based on deep assessment of bilateral relations
The Burkinabe government justified its decision through an official statement highlighting the breakdown in mutual trust and respect that had characterized recent bilateral relations. The communiqué emphasized that the foundational principles of non-interference and national sovereignty were no longer being upheld in the relationship with France.
The announcement came after months of escalating tensions, including what the government described as France’s persistent interference in Burkina Faso’s internal affairs and alleged support for destabilizing networks operating within the country and across the Sahel region.
Key grievances outlined in the statement
The Burkinabe authorities presented several specific grievances against the French government:
- Aggressive diplomatic posture: Active campaigns perceived as attempts to undermine Burkina Faso’s leadership and government stability
- Neocolonial ambitions: Allegations of France maintaining influence through covert support to armed groups and terrorist organizations operating in the region
- Media bias: Systematic attempts to portray Burkina Faso negatively in international media spaces, presenting the country as an outlier in the global community
- Sovereignty violations: Continuous encroachment on Burkina Faso’s decision-making autonomy in security and political matters
The government statement explicitly rejected accusations of anti-French sentiment among the Burkinabe population, affirming that “the bonds between our peoples transcend political decisions”.
Government reassures foreign residents
Despite this diplomatic rupture, the Burkinabe government issued a strong reassurance to all foreign nationals, particularly French citizens, currently residing in the country. Authorities pledged to maintain the safety and legal protections of all expatriates while urging residents to exercise restraint and respect local laws in their interactions.
Maintaining regional partnerships
The statement concluded with Burkina Faso’s commitment to pursuing independent foreign policy, emphasizing the development of South-South cooperation and balanced relationships with all nations. The government expressed openness to constructive dialogue with the international community, provided such engagements respected Burkina Faso’s sovereignty and equality.
The official communiqué was signed by Pingdwendé Gilbert Ouédraogo, Government Spokesperson and Officer of the Order of the Stallion, who concluded: “Burkina Faso remains committed to building a just, peaceful, and prosperous world in partnership with nations that share these values.”
