Bénin’s president wadagni strengthens regional ties in Togo

During a recent friendly and working visit to Lomé, Bénin’s President Romuald Wadagni and Togo’s President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé reaffirmed their shared commitment to bolstering bilateral cooperation, advancing regional integration, and enhancing security coordination.

This significant stop in Lomé, focused on strengthening Bénin-Togo bilateral relations, forms part of President Wadagni’s broader sub-regional tour. His itinerary has already included essential visits to Nigeria, Niger, and Burkina Faso, underscoring the priority the Béninese leader places on fostering robust neighborly relations across West Africa.

On Wednesday in Togo, President Romuald Wadagni engaged in productive discussions with President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé of the Togolese Republic. Their dialogue centered on reinforcing the strong bilateral ties between their nations, promoting deeper regional integration, and establishing more effective security coordination efforts.

This series of diplomatic engagements marks a clear strategic direction for Bénin’s new head of state since assuming the highest office. Prior to his visit to Lomé, President Wadagni’s diplomatic outreach to Nigeria, Niger, and Burkina Faso consistently highlighted his dedication to prioritizing strong regional partnerships and cooperative frameworks within West Africa.

A joint communiqué issued following the high-level meeting confirmed that both leaders reiterated their unwavering commitment to deepening the historical bonds of fraternity, solidarity, and cooperation between Bénin and Togo. They particularly emphasized the crucial role of continuous political dialogue in solidifying peace, ensuring stability, and fostering mutual trust.

Discussions also delved into pressing economic matters. Both parties expressed satisfaction with the positive trajectory of commercial exchanges and agreed upon concrete steps to enhance connectivity infrastructure, streamline the flow of cross-border trade, and encourage private investments in both countries.

Addressing broader regional concerns, the two leaders reaffirmed their steadfast commitment to West African integration and the principle of free movement for people, goods, and services within the region. They also articulated their profound concern regarding the escalating threat of terrorism and the challenges posed by transnational crime, pledging to intensify their collaborative security efforts.

As the visit concluded, President Romuald Wadagni extended an invitation to President Faure Gnassingbé for an official visit to Bénin. The invitation was graciously accepted, and the specific arrangements and timing for this reciprocal visit will be determined through diplomatic channels.
