Benin political landscape shifts as ld party stays in opposition and fcbe joins ruling bloc

The Les Démocrates (LD) party has solidified its position in Bénin’s opposition landscape following an extraordinary national council meeting held on May 9. The gathering focused on structural challenges and future prospects for the political formation, reaffirming its commitment to opposition politics despite shifting alliances in the country’s evolving political climate.

In an official statement delivered by Lambert De La Pierre Sodji, the party led by Nourénou Atchadé emphasized that its opposition status has been officially recognized by the Ministry of Interior since April 26, 2022. “The LD party solemnly reaffirms its dedication to serving as a credible and responsible opposition force in Bénin’s democracy”, the communiqué stated.

Highlighting the importance of a robust opposition in modern governance, the party expressed its intention to maintain constructive political criticism of President-elect Romuald Wadagni while strictly adhering to republican institutions. “No balanced democracy can thrive without a structured and accountable opposition”, the statement underscored.

FCBE exits opposition after electoral setbacks

The LD’s stance comes at a pivotal moment as the Forces Cauris pour un Bénin Émergent (FCBE) officially abandoned its opposition position following the presidential election. The party, once a key opposition player, justified its decision by pointing to its disappointing performance in both presidential and legislative elections.

The FCBE’s presidential candidate, Paul Hounkpè, secured only 5.95% of the vote—far behind the victorious Romuald Wadagni. Legislative elections yielded no parliamentary seats for the party, prompting a strategic pivot. Yaya Garba, a senior FCBE official, acknowledged the electorate’s clear choice, stating, “The people have spoken, and we respect their decision”.

The FCBE also extended congratulations to outgoing President Patrice Talon for his two terms and for overseeing what the party described as peaceful elections. With the FCBE’s departure from opposition ranks, Les Démocrates now stands as the primary officially recognized opposition force in Bénin. Notably, the LD did not contest the presidential election due to insufficient political sponsorships under Bénin’s electoral code.
