Babacar Ba condemns attempt to smear Ousmane Sonko over Ndiaga Seck case

Political arrest sparks controversy as Sonko faces indirect accusations

The detention of political figure Ndiaga Seck, currently facing allegations of unnatural acts, has intensified public debate in Senegal. He was formally charged by a Louga judge and remanded in custody this week.

Amid this legal turmoil, social media narratives have begun drawing questionable connections between Seck’s case and Ousmane Sonko, the country’s Prime Minister. This emerging trend has drawn sharp criticism from Babacar Ba, President of the Forum des Justiciables.

Unfounded attacks on Sonko’s reputation

In a strongly worded statement, Ba condemned what he describes as a deliberate smear campaign targeting the Prime Minister. As the head of government, Sonko represents the integrity of state institutions, making such attacks particularly damaging.

Ousmane Sonko embodies the government’s authority,” Ba asserted. “Attempting to tarnish his reputation or undermine his credibility through association with this case is not only irresponsible but fundamentally violates the principles of a lawful society.”

Ba emphasized that Seck’s legal troubles should remain entirely separate from political discourse. “Linking his name—or any official’s—to this matter for the sole purpose of discrediting them is unacceptable,” he declared, stressing that such tactics erode democratic norms.

Legal proceedings under scrutiny

Seck’s arrest follows charges filed in Louga, where he now awaits trial. While the specifics of the case remain under judicial review, the public discourse has taken a troubling turn, with unverified claims circulating online.

The Forum des Justiciables has urged restraint, calling for a separation between judicial processes and political narratives. Ba’s intervention underscores growing concerns over misinformation and its impact on public trust in institutions.
