Arrest of imam in Burkina Faso sparks protests over new worship law

The capital of Burkina Faso witnessed unprecedented scenes of unrest this week as hundreds of worshippers took to the streets in protest following the detention of a prominent religious leader. The arrest of Imam Mohamed Kindo, a well-known figure in the Sunni Muslim community, has intensified tensions surrounding a controversial new bill that seeks to regulate religious practices across the country.

controversial legislation ignites public outcry

The government’s draft law, adopted during a ministerial meeting on March 19, aims to restrict religious practices in public spaces such as government offices, hospitals, and military barracks. This initiative has drawn sharp criticism from religious groups, particularly Sunni Muslims, who view it as an infringement on their constitutional rights to freedom of worship.

Imam Kindo, a vocal opponent of the legislation, was taken into custody on Tuesday afternoon, just hours before the start of Eid al-Adha celebrations. The timing of his arrest further fueled public anger, with demonstrators gathering in Ouagadougou to voice their discontent. Confrontations between protesters and security forces escalated, leading to the use of tear gas and forceful dispersals in the city center.

echoes of past unrest

This is not the first time a religious figure’s detention has sparked public backlash in Burkina Faso. Earlier in April, Imam Mahmoud Barro of Bobo-Dioulasso was similarly arrested under contentious circumstances. Even more recently, on March 31, cyber-activist Mahamadi Baguian—a government supporter—died in police custody in Ouagadougou, raising further concerns about state actions against dissenting voices.

The recurring pattern of detentions and protests underscores the deep divisions over the government’s approach to regulating religious and civic freedoms. As the debate intensifies, the nation remains on edge, with citizens and authorities locked in a standoff over the balance between security and individual liberties.
