AES advances security and integration in the Sahel region

The Alliance of Sahel States (AES) is steadily reinforcing its achievements across multiple critical domains, as highlighted by Niger’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bakary Yaou Sangaré. Speaking during an interview broadcast in 2026, he outlined the progress made by the three member nations—Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso—in deepening collaboration.

Strengthening Security Through Unified Military Efforts

The AES has taken significant strides in military cooperation by establishing a unified force and a joint operational headquarters in Niamey. This framework serves as a cornerstone for coordinated security operations, enhancing the region’s ability to address evolving threats.

Diplomatic Unity for Global Influence

On the diplomatic front, member states have introduced a shared diplomatic map and improved coordination among their foreign representations. The collective aim is to present a unified stance in international forums, amplifying the AES’s voice on global issues.

Beyond Security: Economic and Media Integration

The AES is also expanding its integration efforts beyond security. Plans include the launch of an investment bank to fund development projects across the alliance’s territory. Additionally, the creation of joint media outlets—including television, radio, and print—will bolster institutional communication and counter disinformation campaigns targeting the Sahel.

While progress is evident, the AES emphasizes that international recognition remains a sovereign decision for its member states.

Solidarity and Commitment in the Face of Loss

A high-level AES delegation, led by General Célestin Simporé, visited Bamako to express solidarity with Mali following the passing of General Sadio Camara. The delegation, received by Malian transition leader General Assimi Goïta, conveyed condolences from both Burkina Faso and Niger.

During the visit, officials paid tribute to General Camara, recognizing his pivotal role in advancing military cooperation across the Sahel. They reaffirmed the AES’s unwavering dedication to combating armed groups and intensifying counter-terrorism efforts in the region.
