Strengthening regional markets through fair competition
Banjul, June 2026 — In a bold move to prepare West Africa for the challenges of digital transformation and intensified regional trade, the ECOWAS Regional Competition Authority (ERCA) and the Competition and Consumer Product Safety Support Program (PACoSPro) have launched a comprehensive awareness campaign in Gambia. The initiative targets both public and private sector players, aiming to foster a robust competition culture capable of navigating the complexities of modern digital economies.
The campaign unfolded during a three-day national seminar in Banjul from June 15 to 17, where leaders from both institutions underscored the urgent need for unified action against emerging anti-competitive practices linked to cross-border trade and digital platforms. At the opening ceremony, Dr. Simeon Koffi, ERCA’s Executive Director, emphasized that economic shifts demand stronger collaboration among competition authorities, public administrations, media outlets, regional organizations, and international partners.
« Only through coordinated and inclusive efforts can we build resilient, fair, and well-integrated markets that truly benefit West African communities, » he stated. His remarks highlighted the importance of aligning with national competition bodies, UEMOA, other regional economic communities, the African Competition Forum, and global partners to create a cohesive regulatory framework.
Programs driving regulatory harmony
PACoSPro, funded by the European Union, has been instrumental in assisting regional and national institutions in developing and harmonizing competition and consumer protection regulations. Mariana Tavares, speaking on behalf of the program, noted that its core mission is to empower authorities with the tools to implement coherent policies that adapt to rapidly evolving markets.
« The digital economy is reshaping market rules at an unprecedented pace, » she explained. « Our goal is to ensure that regulatory frameworks are not only effective but also flexible enough to address new challenges as they arise. »
Gambia’s commitment to fair markets
Representing Gambia’s Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration, and Employment, Deputy Permanent Secretary Mariama Fofana reaffirmed the country’s dedication to fostering fair competition and robust consumer protection. She described competition as a critical driver for innovation, productivity, and economic growth, stressing that creating an environment conducive to equitable competition and private sector development remains a top national priority.
« A level playing field for businesses and reliable protections for consumers are essential for sustainable development, » she asserted. « Gambia is fully committed to this vision. »
Collective action for a competitive future
Participants at the seminar agreed that the challenges posed by globalization and the digital economy extend beyond the reach of any single institution. They called for a convergence of efforts among national, regional, and international actors to build predictable regulatory mechanisms, enhance the appeal of West African markets to investors, and ensure that regional economic integration delivers tangible benefits to consumers.
The collaboration between ERCA, PACoSPro, and Gambia’s Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (GCCPC) marks a significant milestone for the ECOWAS region. By aligning with international best practices in competition law and consumer protection, West Africa is positioning itself to thrive in an era where digital platforms are redefining market dynamics.
