Wendie Renard (OL Lyonnes) : « Le score ne reflète pas du tout la physionomie du match »
Lyon captain, Wendie Renard, offered her perspective on the 4-0 defeat against Barcelona in the Women’s Champions League final, asserting that the scoreline did not truly capture the dynamics of the match.
Following the conclusive match against Barcelona, Wendie Renard, the captain of OL Lyonnes, acknowledged the severity of the result. “The score is substantial,” Renard stated, “but in my view, it does not at all reflect the actual flow of the game; however, they were undeniably effective. Therefore, congratulations to Barcelona. They are, without question, world-class players.” She elaborated on the nature of finals, where teams are typically evenly matched. “At pivotal moments, they struck with force and displayed a clinical edge in front of goal. We, conversely, failed to be as decisive, and for that, we were punished. As I mentioned, after the third goal, the fourth came late in the match. You’re pushing forward, and they capitalize on favorable counter-attacks. But this is football; we must learn and continue our hard work.”
Renard underscored that a career, much like a season, is rarely a straightforward progression. “A career is never linear, a season is never linear,” she reflected. She reiterated her commendation for Barcelona, emphasizing the invaluable experience this final provides for her squad, which also faces significant areas for improvement. “When the opportunity to reach a final presents itself, one must not let such a chance slip away. But that’s just how it is; it’s life, it’s football, and the imperative is to keep working.”
