Us embassy issues travel advisory for american citizens in Bamako

The United States Embassy in Mali has issued a comprehensive security advisory to its citizens residing in the capital, Bamako. The advisory urges heightened caution and anticipates potential travel disruptions, citing a significant increase in security measures observed on routes leading to Modibo Keita International Airport and within various key districts of the city.

According to the embassy’s directives, Malian authorities have notably bolstered their security presence throughout Bamako. This surge includes the implementation of additional checkpoints, the establishment of roadblocks, and the possibility of temporary closures on certain thoroughfares, all of which are expected to cause considerable traffic delays and impact movement across the city.

These enhanced security protocols are believed to coincide with a period of elevated safety concerns, particularly during upcoming religious observances such as Eid al-Adha (Tabaski), which is anticipated around May 27. Consequently, the embassy has advised American citizens to limit non-essential travel until the end of the month.

The guidelines further instruct US citizens to actively avoid areas where gatherings or demonstrations are taking place, to refrain from attempting to bypass security barriers, to maintain a strong awareness of their immediate surroundings, and to exercise extreme vigilance when navigating within the country.

Moreover, the embassy has strongly recommended that individuals review and update their personal security plans, ensure reliable means of communication are maintained, keep all travel documents current and readily accessible, and prepare comprehensive emergency strategies, including identifying safe havens should the need arise.
