In a post on X (formerly Twitter) late on June 11, 2026, U.S. Ambassador to Morocco Richard Duke Buchan III expressed his honor at welcoming elected representatives from Morocco’s southern provinces. The event commemorated the 250th anniversary of American independence. “We extend our gratitude to our partners from Laâyoune and Dakhla for their attendance and commitment to peace and progress in this region,” he remarked.

Accompanying the post was a photograph featuring Ambassador Buchan alongside key figures: Moulay Hamdi Old Errechid, Mayor of Laâyoune; Ynja El Khattat, President of the Dakhla Oued Eddahab Regional Council; and Sidi Hamdi Oild Errechid, President of the Laayoune Sakia El Hamra region.

The U.S. Embassy in Rabat hosted a major ceremony at the Chellah on June 9, 2026, attended by Moroccan and international dignitaries. During his speech, Ambassador Buchan emphasized Morocco’s unwavering support for the Sahara region: “We endorse His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s vision of transforming the Sahara into a hub for transatlantic partnerships and opportunities.” He underscored the enduring historical ties between Morocco and the United States, stating: “This partnership, rooted in history and strengthened by trust, paves the way for the next 250 years of deepened economic and human connections between our peoples.”
