UN stresses urgent need for inclusive political process in Democratic Republic of Congo
The United Nations Security Council has issued a strong appeal to political leaders in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to prioritize a nationwide inclusive dialogue. Speaking from New York, James Swan, head of the UN Stabilization Mission in DRC (MONUSCO), emphasized the critical importance of safeguarding civic spaces and fundamental freedoms—particularly freedom of expression and assembly—so all stakeholders can participate in a peaceful and secure environment.
The call comes at a time when constitutional debates have sharply divided the nation, and tensions have flared around recent incidents involving the Episcopal Conference of the Congo (CENCO), which was targeted by pro-government supporters in Kinshasa.
Security reforms and national stability
Mr. Swan also commended the establishment of a national commission tasked with overseeing security sector reform and highlighted progress on the country’s first-ever National Security Policy, currently being finalized under presidential leadership. These measures, he noted, are essential steps toward restoring stability in a region still reeling from prolonged conflict.
As the DRC stands at a crossroads between reform and escalating political divisions, the international community’s call for dialogue reflects growing concern over the country’s stability and democratic future.
