Togo’s faure gnassingbé champions african integration and regional peace

Togolese leader Faure Gnassingbé has been actively engaged in a series of diplomatic discussions across Central and East Africa, focusing on enhancing regional cooperation and fostering peace, particularly within the Great Lakes region. His recent engagements included attending the inauguration ceremony for Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni in Kampala on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, following Museveni’s re-election.

During the official event, President Gnassingbé and President Museveni held discussions concerning critical security issues impacting the Great Lakes area, with a particular emphasis on the ongoing crisis in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Reports from the Togolese presidency indicate that Lomé and Kampala sustain consistent dialogues aimed at bolstering efforts for peace and stability throughout this vital African sub-region.

Just prior to his visit to Kampala, President Gnassingbé traveled to Oyo, Congo, for a working meeting with President Denis Sassou N’Guesso. Their conversations centered on strengthening bilateral cooperation and exploring various economic matters of mutual benefit to both nations.

A key topic of discussion between the two leaders was the implementation of agreements established in August 2020 concerning the Autonomous Port of Lomé and the Autonomous Port of Pointe-Noire. These port facilities are recognized as crucial strategic infrastructure for facilitating trade flows between Central and West Africa.

Beyond economic considerations, the dialogues also encompassed the broader political and security challenges confronting the African continent. As an African Union mediator for the crisis in the eastern DRC, the Togolese head of state is steadfast in his diplomatic consultations, advocating for sustainable resolutions and fostering deeper African integration.
