Faure Gnassingbé, the President of Togo, undertook an official visit to Kampala, Uganda, on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. The Togolese head of state participated in the swearing-in ceremony for President Yoweri Museveni, who was re-elected following the general election held on January 15.
The event, themed “Protecting achievements and taking a qualitative step towards upper-middle-income country status,” brought together numerous African heads of state, alongside delegations from Europe, Asia, and America.

During his visit, Faure Gnassingbé extended his congratulations to his Ugandan counterpart, Yoweri Museveni, wishing him considerable success for his new term. In reciprocation, President Museveni acknowledged the presence of the Togolese executive leader, emphasizing it as a testament to the strong cooperative ties between Lomé and Kampala.

Discussions between the two leaders also encompassed critical security matters concerning the Great Lakes region. As an African Union mediator for the ongoing crisis in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the Togolese leader reiterated his dedication to continuing consultations with various regional stakeholders to foster a lasting resolution to the conflict.

President Museveni, for his part, commended Togolese diplomacy, highlighting its consistent focus on dialogue and the pursuit of peaceful resolutions. This significant visit underscores Togo’s unwavering commitment to remaining an active participant in African efforts towards peace and robust regional integration.
