The French embassy in Yaoundé has justified its decision to tighten financial requirements for Cameroonian students applying to private French institutions. Speaking at a press conference on July 16, officials attributed the move to a surge in fraudulent visa applications detected through Campus France.

Muriel Piquet-Viaux, Advisor for Cooperation and Cultural Action, highlighted several types of irregularities, including fake bank statements, altered financial records, forged identity documents, and inaccurate proof of funds. To combat this, consular authorities have strengthened verification processes, mandating thorough checks of all submitted documents.

New financial obligations for Cameroonian students

Under the updated rules, Cameroonian students admitted to French private institutions must now provide proof of full tuition payment or demonstrate complete access to required funds before a visa is issued. For those who have already paid a deposit, the embassy noted that procedures will vary by institution, assuring that blocked funds will be released once the visa is granted.

Cameroon’s unique status in France’s visa policy

As of now, Cameroon remains the only African country subjected to these stricter student visa requirements. The measure has sparked significant concern and backlash among families, many of whom argue that the new rules disproportionately affect aspiring students.
