souley onohiolo to end 8-month beard challenge on july 3
After eight months of anticipation tied to an unresolved government reshuffle, journalist Souley Onohiolo is set to finally shave his iconic beard in a symbolic event dubbed Operation “Drop the Beard”. The ceremony will take place this Friday, July 3, at the Botanik’s Beauty Center in Yaoundé’s Essos district.
Operation “Drop the Beard” culminates Souley Onohiolo’s eight-month protest
Journalist Souley Onohiolo launched his unconventional campaign in October 2025, vowing to maintain his thick beard until President Paul Biya implemented a long-awaited government reshuffle. The promise came after Biya’s controversial re-election in October 2026, when public frustration over political stagnation reached a boiling point.
The organizing committee announced the historic event through a formal statement: “On Friday, July 3, 2026, at noon, the official shaving ceremony for Souley Onohiolo—renowned journalist, veteran reporter, and editorialist—will take place at the Botanik’s Beauty Center in Yaoundé’s Essos neighborhood.”
The ceremony will be presided over by Dieudonné Mveng Balla, founder of Info TV, who has been named general supervisor of the event. Organizers describe it as an unprecedented gathering of media personalities from Cameroon and beyond, celebrating what they call a “unique protest that turned a personal challenge into a national conversation.”
The eight-month beard grew from a simple wager into a powerful symbol of resistance. At its core, the challenge represented a silent but determined call for change in Cameroon’s political landscape. The thick beard became a visual reminder of a nation waiting for action that never came.
In a statement, the organizing committee emphasized the deeper meaning behind the gesture: “This was never just about hair. It was about resistance, civic engagement, and the unyielding desire to push society forward. The July 3 ceremony marks the conclusion of this extraordinary journey, witnessed by those who followed from afar and those who stood beside him.”
