Sonko meets Dakar archbishop ahead of popenguine 2026 pilgrimage

Days before the 138th edition of the Popenguine Marian pilgrimage, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko paid a courtesy visit to Dakar’s Notre-Dame des Victoires Cathedral. The meeting took place in an atmosphere of warmth and mutual respect, with the Archbishop of Dakar, Monseigneur André Guèye, personally receiving the head of government.

Ousmane Sonko arrived at the cathedral accompanied by government spokesperson Marie Rose Faye and Deputy Béatrice Germaine Faye. Their discussions centered on social harmony, national cohesion, and interfaith dialogue, all critical themes as the country prepares for the upcoming religious event.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to peaceful coexistence, tolerance, and national unity—values deeply rooted in Senegal’s social fabric. He also praised the pivotal role of religious leaders in maintaining stability and fostering national solidarity.

Monseigneur André Guèye welcomed the visit, offering prayers for national peace, unity, and the success of ongoing development initiatives. The upcoming Popenguine pilgrimage, one of the largest religious gatherings in Senegal, is expected to draw tens of thousands of devotees, reinforcing the nation’s tradition of faith and community.
