Sonko criticizes lack of judicial action in accounting audits

During a high-level interministerial meeting on infrastructure development, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko sharply questioned Justice Minister Yassine Fall about the slow judicial response to financial discrepancies uncovered in recent audits. The exchange highlighted growing frustration over accountability in public spending.

The Prime Minister expressed skepticism about the government’s current approach, stating that citizens are being asked to make repeated sacrifices while alleged financial misconduct goes unpunished. Speaking to the assembled officials, Sonko questioned the purpose of ongoing fiscal reforms if they fail to hold individuals accountable for mismanagement.

Sonko’s demands for transparency

In a pointed critique, the Prime Minister emphasized that his administration was elected to establish clear lines of responsibility. « In this country, you can do whatever you want and remain protected, » he declared, citing cases where billions were allegedly wasted without consequences. « The system remains untouched, and those responsible walk free. »

He stressed that public trust depends on visible action. « If justice itself is compromised, what recourse do we have? » Sonko questioned, urging an immediate review of stalled judicial proceedings. « These cases belong to the people, not to magistrates or officials. »

Minister Fall’s response

The Justice Minister acknowledged structural challenges but assured the Premier that her team is actively pursuing accountability. « We are working tirelessly to ensure that those at fault face consequences, » she stated, adding that progress would be reported in due course.

Sonko remained unconvinced, reiterating the need for urgent action. He called for public disclosure of each case’s status, arguing that transparency is non-negotiable. « Accountability cannot be delayed, » he insisted, warning that the government must « raise the tone » to restore faith in the justice system.

The heated exchange underscored tensions within the administration over how to balance fiscal reforms with the demand for swift judicial accountability.
