Government meeting turns into heated debate over justice system
Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko expressed deep frustration during Thursday’s interministerial council session regarding the glacial pace of judicial proceedings linked to financial accountability. His remarks came after Justice Minister Yassine Fall presented updates on ongoing cases, where Sonko openly questioned the judiciary’s effectiveness in handling alleged mismanagement of public funds.
Sonko challenged the current judicial system, citing concerns over persistent impunity and the absence of tangible legal outcomes in several high-profile cases. He emphasized that substantial public resources may have been misappropriated without visible judicial action, which, in his view, undermines public trust in government institutions.
The Prime Minister stressed the urgent need to identify responsibilities at all levels, including former and current officials. He went further to describe structural dysfunctions within the justice system, suggesting that some cases face deliberate or systemic delays.
The Justice Minister responded by assuring that her department is actively working to expedite proceedings. She acknowledged operational challenges but reaffirmed the judiciary’s commitment to pursuing cases where sufficient evidence exists.
Sonko, however, insisted on faster resolution and greater transparency in case tracking. He underscored that financial accountability remains a cornerstone of the current administration’s mandate, calling for urgent action to restore public confidence.
