Sénégal’s shifting political landscape: national assembly president resigns, sonko poised for new role

Amidst a climate of suspense, political deadlock, and unexpected twists, Sénégal’s ongoing political crisis continues to command significant attention. Just two days after the dismissal of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, Malick Ndiaye, who served as President of the National Assembly, announced his resignation from the legislative body’s top position this Sunday, May 25. This pivotal decision followed a crucial meeting of his political party, Pastef.

“Following deep reflection, matured in silence, with a profound sense of responsibility and dedication to the state, I have chosen to step down from my duties as President of the National Assembly of Sénégal. This decision stems from a personal choice, guided primarily by my understanding of institutional integrity, public accountability, and the paramount interest of the Nation,” stated Ndiaye on Facebook, who previously held the second-highest office in the country.

Since his election to lead the National Assembly, Malick Ndiaye affirmed his unwavering commitment, working alongside deputies and the parliamentary administration, to bolster the institution, reinforce principles of transparency and oversight, and elevate the Senegalese Parliament’s standing both nationally and internationally.

Beyond this significant resignation, the National Assembly also took action this Sunday, May 25, by reinstating Deputy Ousmane Sonko. Immediately following these developments, an election for the new President of the institution was scheduled for Tuesday, May 26. All indicators suggest that the Pastef leader is now strongly positioned to assume control of the legislative chamber, given his party’s substantial parliamentary majority. This marks a rapid ascent that could see him transition, within a mere 72 hours, from being a dismissed Prime Minister to becoming the nation’s second most powerful figure.

One truth now appears undeniable: Sénégal’s political dynamic has evolved from a collaborative partnership between Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko into a distinct political rivalry. A complex interplay of alliances, power struggles, and strategic maneuvers is expected to define Senegalese political life in the coming months, leading up to local elections and the anticipated 2029 presidential race.

A critical question also remains unresolved: will President Bassirou Diomaye Faye opt to dissolve the National Assembly once the constitutional deadline expires this upcoming December?

In the interim, ever since Ousmane Sonko’s dismissal last Friday, Sénégal remains on edge, awaiting the announcement of the incoming Prime Minister who will be tasked with forming a new government amidst an exceptionally charged political atmosphere.
