Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has issued a comprehensive directive to ministers overseeing flood prevention, urging them to implement crucial measures ahead of the forthcoming rainy season.
During a recent Council of Ministers session, Mr. Sonko provided explicit instructions for the relevant ministries to adopt appropriate strategies, as confirmed by government spokesperson Marie Rose Faye.
The Prime Minister specifically tasked these ministers with ensuring the immediate execution of several key actions. These include the updating and validation of all municipal emergency plans, along with a thorough verification of the operational readiness of early warning systems and essential communication channels.
Furthermore, he advised them to prioritize the pre-positioning of intervention resources and to orchestrate a comprehensive inter-ministerial simulation exercise, slated to occur before June 15, 2026.
A communiqué from the Council of Ministers highlighted the Prime Minister’s commendation for the preparatory work already undertaken by the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation, alongside other state services. This foundational work encompasses crucial activities such as the clearing of drainage networks, inspection of water management infrastructure, strategic placement of pumps, and the development of robust emergency plans.
Recognizing the inherently inter-ministerial nature of flood prevention efforts, the Prime Minister called upon all government departments to foster seamless collaboration. This collective endeavor is to be coordinated by the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation, with vital support from the Ministry of Interior in areas pertaining to civil protection and crisis management.
