Senegal’s president slams Sonko’s confrontational approach
Coalition defends President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s leadership amid Sonko’s escalating rhetoric

The rift between Senegal’s presidential camp and National Assembly leader Ousmane Sonko has deepened following his latest inflammatory remarks during a political rally in Mbacké. In an official statement released on July 13, 2026, the Coalition Diomaye Président forcefully condemned Sonko’s attacks on President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, accusing him of fostering a climate of endless confrontation.

Sonko’s recent speech in Mbacké, during which he inaugurated a new political headquarters, drew sharp criticism from the ruling coalition. The alliance described his statements as “scandalous” and a breach of the “responsibility expected of all leaders.”

The coalition accused Sonko of launching “crypto-personal attacks” targeting President Faye, behavior they argue undermines the dignity of Senegal’s institutions. The statement emphasized that such conduct “does not honor his role as Speaker of the National Assembly.”

Beyond personal criticism, the ruling party accused Sonko of deliberately “disrupting public peace” by embracing a strategy of perpetual confrontation, a claim they view as incompatible with constructive governance.

In contrast, the Coalition Diomaye Président portrayed President Faye as a leader committed to “methodical governance, serenity, openness, and responsibility.” The alliance reaffirmed its unwavering support for the president, vowing to remain mobilized to ensure the “success of the national transformation agenda.”
