Senegal: President Bassirou Diomaye Faye removes Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko

In a significant development for Senegal‘s political landscape, Oumar Samba Ba, the Secretary General of the Presidency, formally announced the termination of Ousmane Sonko‘s tenure as Prime Minister. Speaking from the venerable Palace of the Republic in Dakar, Ba confirmed that this executive decision extends to all other members of the government, who have similarly been relieved of their official duties.
“Pursuant to Decree n°2026-1128, dated May 22, 2026, His Excellency Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, the President of the Republic, has concluded the mandate of Mr. Ousmane Sonko as Prime Minister. Consequently, the appointments of all ministers and secretaries of state, who comprised the government, have also been revoked. The outgoing cabinet members are instructed to oversee current governmental affairs during this transitional period,” Oumar Samba Ba articulated in his official statement.
This pivotal announcement follows a period marked by growing friction between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko over recent months. Notably, Sonko had served as a mentor to Faye, who assumed the presidency in April 2024. After being prevented from running for the presidential office himself, Sonko had publicly endorsed Bassirou Diomaye Faye as his chosen successor in the electoral contest against former head of state Macky Sall.
