Senegal’s political rift: diomaye-sonko alliance crumbles

PolitiqueSénégal

The political separation between Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and his former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko is now solidified, yet many Senegalese students struggle to comprehend the dissolution of their once-powerful alliance.

This Monday, Senegal’s newly appointed Prime Minister unveiled the members of his government. Just hours prior, Ousmane Sonko, the influential leader of their political party, Pastef-Les Patriotes, had declared that no members of the party would participate in the new cabinet.

This pronouncement effectively seals the political separation between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and his now former ally, Ousmane Sonko, confirming the definitive split between the two erstwhile partners.

The political divergence between these two prominent figures has sparked considerable confusion and disappointment among many Senegalese students. At the prestigious Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, numerous individuals are still grappling with the end of a partnership that had symbolized hope for transformative change.

Profound disillusionment among supporters of the former duo

Under the shade of trees at the Faculty of Letters, Amath Segnane diligently continues his studies. Like countless young voters, he had invested significant hope in the alliance between Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko.

The student openly expresses his profound disappointment. “They convinced us that Diomaye and Sonko were one. They led us to believe they trusted each other and would work hand-in-hand to uplift this nation. But if, today, we arrive at this separation, it is undeniably a massive disappointment,” he lamented.

For him, the rupture between the two leaders casts a shadow over the image of unity that had defined their remarkable political ascent.

For some, an unavoidable political separation

Minutes before his class began, Mamadou Bah, a student at the Faculty of Economics and Management, offered his perspective, suggesting that this political rupture was, in fact, predictable.

According to Bah, underlying tensions between the two leaders had been evident for an extended period. “We observed that, for a long time, the former Prime Minister no longer respected authority. He positioned himself above the President of the Republic. Therefore, I am not surprised by his dismissal from office, nor by the separation. I stand in agreement with the President of the Republic,” he asserted.

While acknowledging his disappointment with how events unfolded, he believes the head of state was justified in reasserting control over the executive branch.

Between skepticism and questions about Senegal’s future

Other students, however, refuse to accept a definitive split. Omar Sarr, an Arabic department student, continues to hold onto hope for a reconciliation between the two former political companions.

For Sarr, their shared journey makes the idea of an irreversible separation difficult to accept. “Without Sonko, we would never have known Diomaye. They worked together for years, even winning the presidential election. And currently, we are divided: some side with Diomaye, others with Sonko. I do not believe there is a divorce; I refuse to believe it,” he confided.

Now, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye leads the government without the backing of the majority party, Pastef-Les Patriotes, while Ousmane Sonko, having assumed the role of President of the National Assembly, transitions into the opposition ranks. This new political dynamic continues to fuel widespread debate and raise critical questions within Senegalese society.
