Senegal’s 2026 world cup squad announced with stars despite injury concerns

The Teranga Lions have unveiled their 28-player squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, featuring key figures like Sadio Mané and Kalidou Koulibaly, even as the latter recovers from injury. Head coach Pape Thiaw expressed confidence in the team’s balanced composition ahead of a challenging group stage that includes a historic rematch with France.

The coach emphasized the team’s ambition to make an impact at the tournament, which kicks off on June 11 across North America. Despite facing formidable opponents including France in Group I, Thiaw insisted the squad is prepared to compete at the highest level.

Group stage lineup and key opponents

The Teranga Lions find themselves in Group I alongside France, Norway, and Iraq. Their campaign begins on June 16 against a French side led by Kylian Mbappé, a rematch of their 2002 opener—a match Senegal famously won.

While the French matchup carries historical significance, Thiaw downplayed any special status, noting that all three group-stage opponents present equal challenges. “We have three opponents. Why focus only on France?” he remarked during the squad announcement. “Norway and Iraq are here too. We share history with France, but this isn’t a unique match for us.”

A squad blending experience and rising talent

The 28-man roster features a mix of seasoned stars and emerging players, reflecting Senegal’s depth. The defensive core includes veteran defender Kalidou Koulibaly alongside young talents like Moussa Niakhaté and Ilay Camara, while the midfield boasts experienced operators such as Idrissa Gana Gueye and Pape Matar Sarr.

The attacking unit brings together Sadio Mané’s creativity with promising forwards like Bamba Dieng and Nicolas Jackson, both of whom delivered standout performances in their respective leagues this season. The squad also highlights the rise of young players like Lamine Camara and Bara Sapoko Ndiaye, who have earned their place through consistent displays.
