Senegal politics: Waly Diouf Bodian dismissed after controversial post

In a striking turn of political fate, Waly Diouf Bodian, a prominent supporter of Ousmane Sonko and a key figure in the Pastef movement, has been removed from his position as director of the Port autonome de Dakar by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. This dismissal comes at a particularly sensitive moment, as a long-forgotten prediction made by Bodian about former President Macky Sall resurfaces with unsettling irony.

Waly Diouf Bodian’s departure marks another chapter in the ongoing reshuffling of top executives at major public enterprises in Senegal. His removal follows a pattern that has seen other high-profile dismissals, including Aïda Mbodji, Toussaint Manga, Ngagne Demba Touré, and Alioune Guèye. The decision was formalized in a council of ministers communiqué, which confirmed Bodian’s replacement by Doune Pathé Mbengue, a civil administrator and current mayor of Cambérène.

From fiery defender to unexpected dismissal

Bodian was not merely a bureaucrat at the helm of one of Senegal’s most critical economic infrastructures. He had carved out a reputation as one of Pastef’s most vocal and uncompromising advocates. On social media and in public debates, he positioned himself as a relentless defender of Ousmane Sonko, often responding with sharp criticism to Sonko’s detractors.

His zeal reached new heights when he declared himself the “Guardian of the Guardian of the Revolution,” a title he bestowed upon himself in a show of unwavering loyalty to Sonko, who had been hailed as the “Guardian of the Revolution.” This fervent allegiance persisted even after Sonko was removed from the prime minister’s office, a move that had left many in the party’s base bewildered. Some expected Bodian to resign in protest, following the example of other Pastef officials who had chosen to step down in solidarity with their leader.

When confronted about this apparent contradiction, Bodian defended his stance, stating, “There is individual management and collective management. Some have handled this issue individually. But we are politicians, we are part of a party, and we listen to the party on these matters. I did not appoint myself as director general; it was within the framework of the party that I was appointed.”

A prophecy turned on its head

The irony of Bodian’s dismissal is underscored by a Facebook post he made in 2022, which has since gained notoriety for its eerie prescience. He wrote, “From April 2024 onwards, the citizen Macky Sall will no longer set foot in the Palais de la République, unless he presents a confirmed invitation from President Ousmane Sonko.”

Two years later, the reality has unfolded with biting irony. Macky Sall returned to Senegal in a context where Ousmane Sonko no longer holds the reins of power. The timing of Sall’s return coincides precisely with the moment Bodian himself was abruptly relieved of his duties at the Port autonome de Dakar by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

A subdued farewell

Bodian’s reaction to his dismissal was notably restrained. Unlike many who might have expressed bitterness or defiance, he responded with a simple message on his Facebook page: “Alhamdoulillah. I give thanks to God.” His departure leaves behind a legacy of fierce loyalty to Ousmane Sonko, but also a trail of unfulfilled prophecies and political twists that have left observers questioning the unpredictability of Senegal’s evolving political landscape.
