Senegal politics: APR leader criticizes Sonko’s judicial populism

In a sharp rebuke from within the political landscape of Senegal, former lawmaker Maïmouna Sène, a key figure in the Alliance Pour la République (APR), has accused Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko of resorting to what she terms as ‘judicial populism’—a tactic she argues diverts attention from the country’s pressing economic challenges.

The APR executive member did not mince words, emphasizing that while accountability is a legitimate institutional duty, it should not be weaponized as a political tool to obscure the Senegalese government’s shortcomings in economic recovery, job creation, and inflation control.

Speaking at a critical juncture for the nation, Maïmouna Sène underscored that the priorities of the Senegalese people lie in tangible progress—not in what she described as a politically motivated ‘witch hunt’ or score-settling. She challenged the Prime Minister to demonstrate leadership by addressing issues within his own ranks before targeting opponents.

‘If you possess evidence, present it to the courts and allow justice to unfold without interference,’ she asserted. ‘The Senegalese people did not entrust the state to dwell on the past, embark on a witch hunt, or settle personal scores. They expect action to curb inflation, generate employment, and revitalize the economy. Practice what you preach—start by cleaning your own house before pointing fingers elsewhere,’ Maïmouna Sène declared.
