Senegal: Dakar grapples with sonko’s dismissal as prime minister

In Sénégal, the recent revocation of the Prime Minister has ignited intense political discussion across Dakar. Following the presidential announcement that officially ended Ousmane Sonko’s tenure, residents of the capital find themselves grappling with a mix of resignation and acceptance, a sentiment brewing after months of underlying tensions between the nation’s two highest executive figures.

“Thank goodness,” remarked Ibrahima Dione, a Dakar resident. “For us, Sonko’s supporters, this was anticipated. Ousmane Sonko has achieved more than any other minister in Sénégal’s history. We will stand by him with immense pride. Bassirou Diomaye Faye has acted immaturely.”

The leader of the African Patriots of Sénégal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF), dismissed along with his entire cabinet, has so far offered only a concise statement via social media. This brief response, however, does little to conceal the growing crisis at the highest echelons of state power.

“This dismissal is quite unsettling,” explained Modou Diaw, another Dakar resident. “I was taken aback by the news; the announcement came so suddenly. It’s not beneficial for the country. What Sénégal truly needs are jobs, not political upheavals.”

President Diomaye Faye largely owes his position to Ousmane Sonko’s widespread popularity, which had generated fervent enthusiasm among Sénégal’s youth. However, observers suggest that the now-former Prime Minister’s series of controversial public statements ultimately contributed to the Head of State’s growing displeasure.

“Many Senegalese were expecting this,” stated Thierno Sow, a Dakar resident. “The President holds the authority to appoint and to dismiss. It is his prerogative. I believe if this action serves the nation’s best interests, then it is the correct course.”

PASTEF secured a decisive victory in the first round of the March 2024 elections, campaigning on a platform promising profound political transformation and a rigorous fight against public sector mismanagement.
