Political rift between Ousmane Sonko and Senegal’s president

The growing political divide between Ousmane Sonko and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has now reached a critical stage. During a press briefing in Dakar, the former Prime Minister outlined the reasons behind the Pastef-Les Patriotes party’s refusal to join the new government led by Ahmadou Alamine Mohamed Lô.

Sonko highlighted key areas where fundamental disagreements with the administration emerged, particularly regarding judicial reform, accountability measures, and the renegotiation of unfavorable economic contracts. The party leader also raised concerns about public debt management, stressing the need for stronger financial safeguards and clearer commitments from international lenders.

He expressed skepticism about the government’s subsidy policies and its approach to judicial governance, questioning whether these align with the country’s long-term interests. Beyond policy disputes, the composition of the cabinet became another point of contention. Sonko argued that as the leading political force in Senegal, his party deserved significant representation in the executive branch, insisting on holding at least half of the ministerial portfolios.

The former Prime Minister also challenged the legitimacy of the new administration, despite some members of his movement being included. However, he ruled out immediate action to destabilize the government, clarifying that the Pastef will not file a no-confidence motion against the current leadership.

This stance underscores the deepening strains within the ruling coalition and signals a new phase of uncertainty in the relationship between the presidency and the party that spearheaded Senegal’s political shift in 2024.
