France’s 2-0 triumph over Morocco sparked widespread celebrations across Île-de-France, yet authorities reported remarkably few disturbances and arrests during the festivities.

The French national team’s 2-0 victory against Morocco in Thursday’s World Cup quarter-final ignited joyful, largely peaceful celebrations throughout Paris and its surrounding suburbs. Initial assessments indicate that the night’s festivities were marked by an overwhelmingly celebratory atmosphere, with only a handful of isolated incidents reported.

Ten individuals apprehended

A small number of fans lit flares in the capital to express their elation, while reports from the nearby suburbs mentioned isolated incidents of firework mortar discharges. As of Friday morning, preliminary figures confirm that ten individuals were taken into custody across Paris and its immediate vicinity in connection with the France-Morocco match celebrations. Specifically, three arrests in Paris were for phone theft, another four in the capital were for armed violence and unlawful assembly, and three more were made in Seine-Saint-Denis for firing mortars. It remains unclear whether all these arrests resulted in formal detentions.

Minor injury reported after clash in the 7th arrondissement

In Paris, an unexpected power outage led to the cancellation of the match screening at the Grand Rex cinema. Fans subsequently dispersed into nearby bars to watch the game. Following the final whistle, celebratory crowds briefly spilled onto the roadways, causing minor traffic disruptions. However, police intervention quickly and peacefully guided them back to the sidewalks.

Near Quai Jacques Chirac in the 7th arrondissement, a scuffle broke out between supporters around 12:30 AM. One individual sustained a minor hip injury from a knife wound and was subsequently transported to a hospital for treatment.

Authorities had previously classified this quarter-final match between France and Morocco as a “particular risk” event. Intelligence reports indicated an “increased risk due to its eliminatory nature and the high stakes of a semi-final qualification,” even considering the late broadcast time of 10 PM. Concerns were raised about potential public gatherings and the use of pyrotechnics, regardless of the match outcome.
