Just one week after his departure from the premiership and the appointment of a new government head in Sénégal, the rift between Ousmane Sonko and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has become strikingly apparent. Initial talks aimed at determining the involvement of Pastef-Les Patriotes party officials in the incoming executive branch ultimately collapsed. A statement released on June 1st by Pastef’s Executive Committee (COMEX), and shared by Ousmane Sonko on his Facebook page, confirmed the party’s official stance: none of its leaders would join the forthcoming administration.
The communiqué detailed numerous discussions held recently between Pastef’s leadership and the Head of State, all in pursuit of consensus regarding the formation of the new governmental team. Pastef underscored its commitment to acting « in a spirit of responsibility », aligning with directives from its governing bodies. Notably, a lengthy meeting took place on the morning of June 1st between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko. While some common ground was identified, the two political figures ultimately failed to bridge fundamental differences concerning the majority’s position and influence within the executive power structure.
Persistent disagreements on governance issues
Following this pivotal meeting, Pastef’s COMEX convened to assess the evolving situation. Fresh proposals were reportedly presented to the President, yet these did not garner a favorable response. Confronted with this deadlock, the party resolved to completely withdraw from the government formation process. The communiqué explicitly stated: « Pastef-Les Patriotes will not participate in the upcoming government and will not have any minister representing it. »
This significant decision is poised to profoundly impact the nation’s political equilibrium. It emerges at a time when the people of Sénégal are eagerly anticipating solutions to pressing economic and social challenges. Despite the breakdown in negotiations, Pastef extended its best wishes for « full success to the new team, » signaling its intention to continue its work from the National Assembly, a body now presided over by Ousmane Sonko. The coming days are expected to reveal the full scope of this new political chapter at the apex of the Senegalese state.
