During the 85th session of the Executive Committee of the African Parliamentary Union (UPA), Ousmane Sonko, the President of Senegal’s National Assembly, held a significant meeting on Thursday, June 4. He welcomed Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, who chairs the continental parliamentary institution’s Executive Committee.

This crucial encounter provided a platform for both leaders to deliberate on the UPA’s foundational missions, its operational framework, and its future trajectory, particularly as the African continent navigates a complex landscape of political, economic, and security obstacles.

Throughout their discussions, Ousmane Sonko underscored the pressing need to bolster the efficacy of the African Parliamentary Union. He outlined several potential reforms aimed at modernizing the organization’s functionality and amplifying its influence in shaping the continent’s major political and institutional directions.
The President of the National Assembly also highlighted the critical importance of fostering enhanced coordination between the recommendations put forth by the UPA and the policy decisions made by the African Union. He posited that a greater alignment between these two pivotal institutions would significantly fortify the coherence of African policies and boost the tangible impact of initiatives geared towards the continent’s development.
This high-level audience forms part of an ongoing strategic dialogue among African leaders, dedicated to strengthening mechanisms for parliamentary cooperation and promoting more effective continental governance, ultimately serving the best interests of African populations.
