Niger: gaya launches major initiative to restore 500 hectares of pastoral lands

Gaya, June 5, 2026 — The urban commune of Gaya has commenced crucial work to rehabilitate 500 hectares of deteriorated pastoral territory, an effort made possible through funding from the Integrated Urban Development and Multisectoral Resilience Project (PIDUREM). Two distinct locations, one within Gaya itself and another in Tara, served as symbolic starting points for these vital operations.

Early on Friday morning, the Prefect of Gaya department presided over the inauguration ceremony, performing the ceremonial first spade digs. Joining the Prefect were the commune’s delegated administrator, the general secretary of the prefecture, a representative from the canton chief, the regional coordinator of PIDUREM and their team. Also in attendance were the Deputy Regional Director of Environment for Dosso, the departmental director of Environment, representatives from ten partner NGOs, the village chief of Tara, and numerous local residents, all witnessing this significant environmental undertaking.

Enhancing and Preserving Vital Grazing Lands

The PIDUREM-funded initiatives are specifically designed to rejuvenate severely degraded grazing areas, implement robust soil erosion control measures, and boost the overall carrying capacity of these lands for livestock. Furthermore, the planned improvements encompass extensive reforestation efforts, the deployment of systems to combat both water and wind erosion, the construction of essential contour structures, and the refurbishment of access routes to streamline pastoral activities and facilitate ongoing monitoring.

Fostering Resilience and Local Economic Growth

According to local authorities, these interventions are expected to bolster community resilience against the impacts of climate change and play a crucial role in safeguarding natural resources. The regional coordinator for PIDUREM highlighted that the project will generate temporary employment opportunities for residents in surrounding areas, thereby delivering immediate economic benefits during the implementation phase.

This initiative is also an integral part of broader actions undertaken by PIDUREM across the region, designed to curb land degradation, enhance food security, and mitigate conflicts over resource use between agriculturalists and herders. The project incorporates rigorous technical and environmental oversight to assess the effectiveness of the improvements and adapt practices as results emerge.

Beneficiaries and the Role of Partner NGOs

The project is poised to directly benefit pastoral households and herders in nearby villages, who will see their grazing routes revitalized and made more secure. Partner NGOs, integral to the implementation process, will conduct awareness campaigns to promote sustainable land management practices and ensure the long-term upkeep of the established improvements. Work commenced promptly, with the initial phase of development and planting scheduled for the coming weeks. Furthermore, regular evaluations and progress reports will be compiled to ensure transparency and to facilitate subsequent disbursements from funding partners.
