New appointments to Cameroon’s top judicial body

On June 2, 2026, President Paul Biya issued a decree appointing new members to Cameroon’s Superior Council of the Judiciary. This move renews the mandate of several key figures while introducing fresh leadership to the institution.

Renewed mandates and new faces in the judiciary

Out of the 14 positions, 10 members have been reappointed for another five-year term after their previous mandates expired a year ago. Among the changes, Ali Mamouda, a long-standing member, has been replaced by Goni Mariam, who previously served as a substitute.

The newly appointed members include:

  • Sali Dahirou, former Minister of Public Service
  • Soppo Toute Marlyse, Deputy representing Wouri (RDPC)
  • Rolande Ngo Issi, Deputy representing Nyong and Kellé (Pcrn)
  • Claude Francis Moukouri, former Vice-President of the Special Criminal Court (TCS)
  • Albert Ekono Nna and Engelbert Bengono, among others

Significance of the appointments

The reshuffle reflects President Biya’s commitment to maintaining continuity within the judiciary while ensuring a balance between experience and new perspectives. The Superior Council of the Judiciary plays a crucial role in overseeing the appointment, promotion, and discipline of judges in Cameroon, making these appointments a matter of national importance.

The revised composition is expected to enhance the council’s effectiveness in upholding judicial independence and professionalism across the country.
