Morocco selected for leading role at 81st UN General Assembly

Morocco has been designated by drawing lots to occupy the first seat at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, set to open this September in New York.

Morocco has been selected through a random drawing to hold the leading position, occupying the first seat at the upcoming 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. This significant session is scheduled to commence next September in New York.

During a plenary session of the General Assembly held on Tuesday in New York, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres conducted the customary drawing of lots to determine which nation would hold the first seat for the upcoming session. Following established protocol within the global body, Morocco emerged as the chosen country.

“The Secretary-General has just drawn the name of the country that will occupy the first seat in the General Assembly Hall for its next session. That country is Morocco,” announced spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric during a press briefing, expressing satisfaction with this particular selection.

This plenary session also saw the election of Khalilur Rahman, the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, as the President of the 81st General Assembly. Furthermore, member states proceeded to elect the nations that will serve as Vice-Presidents for the session. These include the United States, China, France, the United Kingdom, Russia, Egypt, Afghanistan, and Gabon.

As the universal deliberative body encompassing all 193 United Nations member states, the General Assembly stands as the organization’s primary multilateral forum, where every nation holds an equal vote. Its crucial responsibilities encompass approving the UN budget, electing non-permanent members to the Security Council, and confirming the appointment of the Secretary-General.
