Morocco reaffirms backing for Libya’s political process at au forum

The Kingdom of Morocco has once again voiced its unwavering support for a political resolution to Libya’s ongoing crisis during a high-level session at the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC).

Speaking on Tuesday at the AU’s emergency meeting on Libya, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Mohamed Arrouchi, underscored the North African nation’s commitment to Libya’s national reconciliation efforts and intra-Libyan dialogue initiatives. His remarks highlighted the importance of fostering consensus among Libyan factions to safeguard progress and ensure sustainable stability.

Arrouchi emphasized that the Skhirat Agreement, signed on December 17, 2015, under the auspices of the United Nations, remains a cornerstone framework for achieving a lasting political solution in Libya. He called for the preservation of Libya’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity—prerequisites for enduring peace and stability.

The Moroccan diplomat also conveyed the Kingdom’s deep appreciation, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, for the African Union’s relentless efforts to promote peace, security, and stability across the continent, particularly its dedicated work toward resolving the Libyan conflict through diplomatic channels.

Highlighting recent milestones, Arrouchi referenced the critical meetings held in Tripoli and Zintan, which culminated in a landmark agreement signed in the Libyan capital on January 7, 2026. This accord brought together representatives from the Government of National Unity and the Government of the East, signaling a significant step forward in the reconciliation process.

Morocco’s proactive role in mediating Libya’s political process was further underscored, with Arrouchi noting the Kingdom’s trusted position among Libyan parties. He stressed that Morocco’s mediation efforts operate strictly within the bounds of international legality, aligning with the Skhirat Agreement and the Bouznika understandings. The goal, he reiterated, is to facilitate a Libyan-led solution that satisfies all stakeholders—one that rejects military escalation in favor of dialogue and negotiation.
