Morocco secures key position in Mediterranean parliamentary assembly
The Kingdom of Morocco has been elected as a member of the Bureau of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (AP-UpM), while also assuming the presidency of the Artificial Intelligence Commission. This recognition underscores the growing confidence in Morocco’s parliamentary diplomacy and its enhanced status within this Euro-Mediterranean institution.
A Moroccan parliamentary delegation led by Abdelmajid Fassi Fihri, Vice President of the Chamber of Representatives, actively participated in the 10th Summit of Parliament Presidents and the 19th plenary session of the AP-UpM, held at the Egyptian Parliament’s headquarters in the new administrative capital over the weekend.
During the event, Fassi Fihri emphasized Morocco’s commitment to strengthening its role within the AP-UpM’s structures. The session validated the new Bureau composition for 2026-2030 and the leadership of permanent commissions, with Morocco securing a seat in the Bureau and the AI Commission presidency.
Diplomatic breakthrough strengthens regional influence
In his address to the plenary session, Fassi Fihri highlighted the AP-UpM’s crucial role in fostering dialogue and cooperation between parliaments on both sides of the Mediterranean. He noted that the selected themes—artificial intelligence, youth engagement and parliamentary diplomacy for peace and stability in the Middle East—reflect the collective awareness of the Euro-Mediterranean parliamentary community amid profound transitional periods.
The Moroccan representative stressed that these themes extend beyond technological changes to encompass cultural shifts, evolving influence mechanisms and new decision-making frameworks. He added that under the guidance of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco continues its modernization drive, digital transformation and technological infrastructure development as part of a strategic vision that prioritizes knowledge-based economy as a key driver for sustainable development, enhanced competitiveness and Morocco’s position as a reliable partner in the Mediterranean, Africa and beyond.
Active engagement in critical Mediterranean issues
The delegation, which included Chaoui Belassal, Meriem Rmili, Houria Didi, Rabab Aïlal, Salwa Demnati and Ibrahim Aâba, participated in various meetings and commissions, contributing to discussions on parliamentary diplomacy, artificial intelligence, youth involvement in decision-making and strengthening regional security, stability and shared development.
Call for strengthened parliamentary cooperation
The sessions concluded with a call to maintain parliamentary coordination among member states and enhance the AP-UpM’s role as a dialogue and trust-building platform serving Mediterranean security, stability, sustainable development and shared prosperity.
